The Third Memory no.1 is a partition composed of two parts of twelve overlapping phrases. It was written for three instruments. The instruments are Mandarin, mother tongue; English, first foreign language and French second foreign language. In this partition, every word-note in the upper part comes from workbooks, dreams, scenes written but never shot and from diaries: my own and that of the Taiwanese writer Miao-jin Qiu from which my film ‘Er Shi Si Xiao Shi’ ( 24 hours ) was inspired.
The original texts, chosen intuitively, were transferred by fragments on Post-its. They were then cut up several times. They are here rearranged to create twelve sentences or twelve vignettes.
The process of fragmentation of the words compromises the sense and the stability of the phrase. The upper part of the partition, written first, opens a time-space where meet sounds of the maternal world and of foreign world. The lower part, written afterword, plays a part in the translation but preserves the trace and some of the mistakes that were made in French and in Mandarin. Some of the words are replaced by a signs, chosen for their sound qualities, others are added to a phrase for the same reasons.
This composition is open for varied interpretations. It has two forms, installation and Book-objet one.
